Ccea as Biology Coursework: an Investigation to Measure

An investigation to measure the percentage light transmission, using a colorimeter, through a solution, from pH 2 – pH 9, in which jelly cubes were immersed over a 24 hour period Interpretation Written Communication of the Data C1 Pepsin is an enzyme that works in the stomach and has an optimal pH between pH 1 and 4 or in acidic conditions. From our graph it can be seen that that the lowest mean percentage light transmission for pepsin is when the buffer has a pH of 2. Trypsin is an enzyme that works in the small intestine and has an optimum pH between pH 7 and 8 or in neutral conditions. From our graph it can be seen that the lowest mean percentage light transmission for trypsin is when the buffer has a pH of 8. C2 and C3 As the pH of the pepsin buffer increases from pH 2 to pH 9 so too does the percentage light transmission through the buffer solution after a 24 hour period. Although when the trypsin buffer has a pH between pH 2 and 8 the percentage light transmission through the buffer solution after a 24 hour period decreases, but from pH 8 to pH 9 the percentage light transmission through the buffer solution after a 24 hour period increases. At a low pH (pH 2) the amount of gelatine broken down by the pepsin is high.We can tell this as this is when there is a low mean percentage light transmission (16. 86%) because a lot of colour of the jelly will leak in the solution causing the colour to be deeper. But at a higher pH (pH 9) the amount of gelatine broken down by the pepsin is low. We can tell this as this as there is a low mean percentage light transmission is high (34. 14%) because a little colour of the jelly will leak in the solution causing the colour to be lighter. At a low pH (pH 2) the amount of gelatine broken down by the trypsin is low so this means there is a high mean percentage light transmission (41. 5%) because a little colour of the jelly will leak in the solution causing the colour to be lighter. At a high pH (pH9) the amount of gel atine broken down by the trypsin is high so this means that there is a low mean percentage light transmission (29%) because a lot of colour of the jelly will leak in the solution causing the colour to be deeper. C4 and C5 An enzyme is a biological catalyst which speeds up a chemical reaction without itself undergoing a permanent change. Most enzymes are globular proteins and contain active sites. The active site is the part of the enzyme which combines with the substrate.Enzymes are specific which means that one enzyme will work on one substrate. All enzymes work best at a particular pH, their optimum pH. The proteins structure of the enzyme is altered in a more alkaline or acidic solution than the specific optimum pH. When an enzyme structure is altered it cannot fit successfully with the substrate. Activity is therefore limited to a few enzyme molecules that are still unaltered or may totally stop. The protein digesting enzymes, pepsin and trypsin, will hydrolyse the substrate, ge latine. This substrate is a major component of jelly. When a coloured jelly, such as raspberry, is exposed to a protein digesting enzyme, the colour is released into the solution as the gelatine is broken down. The intensity of the colouring released into the buffer can be estimated with a colorimeter. Trypsin is often found naturally in neutral or slightly alkaline conditions. Therefore the most enzyme activity and most colour is released from the jelly would be expected at a pH 7 or 8 and in solutions above or below this pH there would be less colour released. Pepsin is often found naturally in very acidic conditions. Therefore the most enzyme activity and most colour is released from the jelly would be expected at a pH 1 or 2 and in solutions above or below this pH there would be less colour released. Evaluation D1 I consider my results to be appropriate in meeting the aims of the investigation because we used a colorimeter. This measures the percentage light transmission as a nume rical value. It is more appropriate than measuring the light intensity by eye as some of the results looked extremely similar and it could be hard to distinguish between samples. It is also more appropriate than measuring the percentage change in mass of the jelly cube before and after the 24 hour period as it is difficult to extract what is left of the jelly and it is not as accurate. D2 In order to try to obtain accurate results a number of procedures had to be carried out; †¢ Firstly, we used the same specimen of jelly. Although the jelly is from the same company there could be a difference in the composition of gelatine. If this was allowed to happen it could mean that it would take longer to break down some samples than others. This would then affect the overall results of the experiment as it would create an anomaly. †¢ Secondly, we also used a colorimeter which is extremely accurate when it comes to measuring the percentage light transmission. As it measures the perce ntage light transmission as a numerical value. †¢ Thirdly, we only handled the side of the cuvette as if we touched the front where the light passed through it would affect how much light passed through as it will leave a finger print on the glass and make it harder for the light to pass through. †¢ Fourthly, we kept the temperature at a constant 25 °C using a water bath.At low temperatures, an increase in temperature causes an exponential increase in enzyme activity. This is because an increase in temperature provides more kinetic energy for the collisions of enzymes and substrates, so the formation of enzyme-substrate complexes increases. At high temperatures (above 40 °C), an increase in temperature causes a sharp decline in enzyme activity. This is because the bonds holding the tertiary structure of the enzyme are broken and so the active site is denatured. †¢ We tried to use the same amount of jelly as this could affect the substrate concentration. If the surf ace area of the substrate increases it means that it has an increased substrate concentration. As the substrate concentration increases so too does the enzyme activity. This is because a greater concentration of substrate increases the chances of collisions and the formation of enzyme substrate complexes. D3 Although the experiment was as fair as it could have been, there were some factors that were beyond our control; †¢ Firstly, we could not accurately cut the cubes into equal sizes as we did not have the equipment to make a straight incision. This would increase the surface area of the substrate which will increase the substrate concentration. This would increase the enzyme activity as it will increase the chance of collision between the enzyme and substrate and more enzyme substrate complexes can be formed. †¢ Secondly, we could not check the temperature of the water bath on a regular basis as the experiment was carried out over a 24 hour period. If the temperature had went above 25 °C it would increase the rate of reaction as it provides more kinetic energy for the collision of the enzyme and the substrate, so the rate at which enzyme-substrate complexes form is increased.Although, if the temperature decreased below 25 °C it would have the opposite effect. It would slow the rate of reaction as it will provide less kinetic energy for the collision of enzymes and the substrate, so the rate at which enzyme-substrate complexes form is decreased. D4 and D5 My experiment is reliable as it was repeated six times in the form of the pooled class result and all of the results seemed to follow the same general trend. Although, if we had more time we may have been able to do the experiment again which would make the average or mean more accurate. However, there were a few anomalies among the group results. As you can see from table 1, in the test for trypsin at pH 9, group 2’s result decreased from the previous result (pH 8) whereas every other gro up increased except for group 3 who’s stayed the same as the previous result (pH 8). This could be caused from a fingerprint being put on the cuvette where the light passes through; this could lower the percentage light transmission through the solution as it will cover the glass.

Discrimination and Equal Employment Opportunity Essay

At a subsiding workplace, a young female employee is assisting with closing up her section of a store. Going into the stock room alone, a fellow male worker corners her into a caged section of the area. Here, the male assistant makes unwanted physical and sexual advances towards the young and scared female worker. What can any person do who is subjected under these horrible workplace conditions that clearly violate their personal rights? As early as 1965, The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (or EEOC) has ensured the protection, promise and safety of those persons exposed to discrimination in disreputable workplaces (U.S. Equal employment Opportunity Commission, 2000). This presentation will include a description of a lawsuit against an organization while giving a brief summary of the EEOC’s important functions. Further on, this report will include the role of the EEOC in relation to the lawsuit along with determining if the case promotes social change and justification. Finally, a comparison will be included between the EEOC and press related accounts describing the incidents of the case while implementing strategies to ensure future compliance with the issue in a multicultural workplace. EEOC Civil Action Case No. 3:11-cv-00920 In Franklin Tennessee, a civil issue was required because a 38-year old general manager of a Finish Line apparel store was outrageously, sexually harassing, three teenaged female employees whose ages ranged from 16-17 (U.S. Equal employment Opportunity Commission, 2000). The Finish Line is a family oriented Indianapolis based sports store that sells sporty shoes and athletic apparel. Subsequently, in Nashville Tennessee the United States jury and officials found the Franklin store general manager guilty for statutory rape and sexually harassing the three, young female assistants who worked under his supervision. On the second of January 2013, the EEOC released a National press statement that awarded the three teenaged workers 30, 000 dollars compensation which included back pay for the endangerment of the criminal acts that were placed against them in the workplace. The crime acted upon the young women was unfortunate, and no one should ever have to work under these conditions of sexual assault and harassment. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was highly committed to ensuring reparations to their clients and victims of workplace oppression. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and its Commitment Like the story from above, everyday people are exposed to workplace discriminations and oppressions. The commitment of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is to ensure persons are not being discriminated or categorized under Title legislation VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (U.S. Equal employment Opportunity Commission, 2000). The Commissions responsibility is to justify and put into action provisions of legislation VII against criminal occupation practices. The EEOC is also in control of managing Federal legislations that make it illegal to discriminate against those because of disability, gender, race, color or ethnic background (U.S. Equal employment Opportunity Commission, 2000). Overall, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sets an example reprimanding those who illegally act on workplace discrimination and harassment. The Role of the EEOC in the Nashville Tennessee Finish Line Harassment Case The role of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was to reinforce Title VII in the case of the three young women filling against the charges placed on the Finish Line store manager in Franklin Tennessee. The lawsuit case indicted Finish Line with endangering three teenaged female workers to unlawful sexual harassment. The EEOC implements federal laws that prohibit employment discrimination and categorization placed on defenseless employees. A statement documented from Kenneth Anderson, EEOC lead trial attorney exclaimed that, â€Å"It is unfortunate that any woman has to deal with sexual harassment in the workplace, especially teenagers. Equally reprehensible is the fact that the harassment was at the hands of their much older male supervisor. We commend these three young women for the tremendous courage they displayed in confronting egregious sexual harassment by their supervisor† (U.S. Equal employment Opportunity Commission, 2000). Press Related Comparisons between the EEOC and other News Accounts Due to the unspeakable acts placed on the three teenaged girls in Franklin Tennessee, discrepancy is requested which protects and provides little information about the entirety of the Nashville Tennessee Finish Line case. Most news accounts support the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions case that involves the two parties present at the U.S. District Court Jury. With both news reports, there are no names provided which preserves the safety of all individuals involved.

Patenting is an expensive process, and one fraught with risks. Explain Essay

Patenting is an expensive process, and one fraught with risks. Explain these risks, and also why people continue to take out patents - Essay Example (Gibbs, 2003) Patents are necessarily applied to new and novel devices and methodologies, inventions which are unique and never thought out in the past and which could be used for beneficial purposes, both from the consumer perspective as well as industrial basis. Patenting is not easy to achieve. It has to be registered at the relevant patent office and the application process is a stringent one to start with. The patent application contains different claims which are in line with the device or methodology and these claims outline the exact sentences which are specific personifications related with the invention. (Mcleod, 2001) The relevant patent laws are checked upon once the patenting application has gone through. At times, there are objections which are raised with the patenting process and told to the authority who wants to have the patenting process activated in the first place. Once the patent has been granted to this individual, he has the right to collect his renewal fees from a number of different countries at the end of each year. This makes sure that the patent is in effect for a long period of time. The risks associated with patents are that they can be easily copied and infringed upon by just about anyone related with the trade, business or industry. (Link, 2003) Thus there are a number of people who oppose the general idea of having patents in the first place. When someone wants to patent there is always this danger of losing one’s invention and becoming a counterfeit in a short period of time. There is the aspect of imitation and copying and then the legal restrictions are not that strong to stop everyone who is bent upon destroying the exclusivity of the new device or methodology which has been patented by the relevant authority. Then there is the monopoly which can be governed by the party who patents this right on his device or methodology that he can wrongfully ask the competitors to be cut out from gaining

Difficult Patients and History Patients Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Difficult Patients and History Patients - Essay Example This lesson will teach students some strategies for dealing with patients who are unwilling or unable to cooperate when giving a family history. Furthermore, this lesson can include a swath of transferable skills that will be useful in other areas, thus providing a much greater benefit than its narrow focus would seem to suggest. However, the most important reason for this might be that this kind of lesson can force a nurse to be critical of the role that informal theory plays in their practice towards patients, to gain confidence as creators of informal theory, and to understand the interaction between formal and informal theory. Section 2: Learner outcomes for the lesson & Learning Objectives This experience will have several general learning outcomes a) allow nurses to be more proficient in such skills when they first experience them in a clinical setting b) give nurses an approximation of the kinds of experiences they could have c) provide transferable skills for patient interact ion for a variety of other situations that are not directly covered in and d) understand their role in forming informal theory, and the relationship between formal theory and informal theory. ... leave with a greater understanding for the real-world situation of patient interaction, a greater degree of comfort in dealing with issues that may arise, and a closer relationship with their classmates, hopefully furthering future learning outcomes. Learner Characteristics Nurses who have already achieved some knowledge of patient history. The goal of this lesson is not for nurses to take a history: they should already know this skill so that they will not have to focus on it throughout the lesson. Rather, they should have enough experience that taking a history will be second nature, and so they can focus on techniques of patient interaction that they employ. Learning Theory While nursing often uses the see one, do one, teach one model, this will differ significantly and focus rather on the development of difficult to define skills and subjective experiences though one-on-one interaction with fellow students. Based on self-authorship theory, this will attempt to both allow nurses t o develop their own skills and techniques that will work for them, hear widely used techniques (as provided by instructors) and techniques developed and used by peers, with the goal of critiquing each technique given. This will allow a great deal of exposure to different ideas without dictating what the right thing to do in a situation. This will hopefully allow nurses to acknowledge their role in developing theories of practice every time they interact with a patient, and note that they have and can develop authority as knowledge creators based on their personal experiences in patient interactions. Instructional methods used for delivery This lesson will rely heavily on role-playing, allowing the students to develop experience, try out different techniques, and form their own conclusion

Commercial speech Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Commercial speech - Research Paper Example In some instances, the promotion of such an idea takes the form of advertising. As Cutler & Muehling (1991) point out, regardless of the channel of communication taken by the agent in promoting the products of the organization, the fact that such mode of communication seeks at making a sale in it is a commercial speech. It is only until recently that this form of communication qualified as a form of speech in the American laws. After the implementation of the laws, various clauses sought to reduce the regulations of commercial speech as provided for in the first amendment. Commercial speech in the past forty years has occupied an awkward position in the theory of first amendment. It was not until recently when the government gave a free hand in advertising regulation. Despite the tremendous efforts in achieving a freely regulated free speech in 1976, commercial speech is still in fact short of qualifying as a form of free speech (Fort & Salbu, 2007). Because of the government’s unwillingness to let go of the stringent regulatory rules of advertising, commercial speech does not qualify into the rules free speech in the country. The reluctance of the Supreme Court to grant full measure of protection of commercial speech as it did to other forms of speech, insisting on the â€Å"common sense distinction† of the law from others disqualifies this as a form of free speech. The decision by the Supreme Court in 1942 to deny first amendment protection to the distribution of a commercial advertising handbill has become one of the major anomalies i n the first amendment bill (Cutler & Muehling, 1991). As such, this exception denies the precise definition of what constitutes the protection of commercial speech. The courts in the recent years have changed the treatment of the commercial speech as a non-protected form of speech in law in the first amendment to full protection (Petty, 1993). Such transformational changes in the law have seen an increase

The Observing a Cemetery Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

The Observing a Cemetery - Essay Example I was deeply engrossed in the sweet and soft music of natures’ orchestra while shiny, intricately engraved brass cross stood directly above to guard me against all evils. As l touched the soft flowers and felt the crisp leaves under me, it dawned on me that like never before, my mind is perfectly clear and my thoughts absolutely focused. Grief-stricken by the obvious neglect, l slumped against a tombstone. Thick overgrown grass and weeds surrounded me. The sky above me was misty and overcast and the atmosphere seemed ghastly. The bitter cold autumn wind bit my body irritably. I watched in sadness, a woman weeping at a nearby grave, her sobbing breaking the eerie silence, like an erroneous note in a chorus. From the ruins of a mausoleum, the wrinkled undertaker was constantly staring at me suspiciously with his tired eyes. The air was thick with the unpleasant smell of exposed skeletons. As my realized the gross disrespect and neglect, the cold and stinging arms of guilt grippe d me. The old oak tree looked just like the untendered graves, a heartbreaking failure to provide rightfully owed perpetual care. In anguish, all my senses screamed sorrow and sadness and l could not lift my eyes from the ground. I was deeply resenting coming here and wanted desperately for this disrespect to end. In these two paragraphs, I described a cemetery, a place by and large associated with negative undertones. In the first paragraph, I describe the graveyard in affirmative radiance, focusing on the serenity, tranquility, and beauty, while in the second I cast a negative shadow, focusing on neglect, and that â€Å"guilty† feeling that seems to grip your body. A Direct Statement of Meaning: I concluded the first paragraph with †¦Ã¢â‚¬Å" it dawned on me that like never before, my mind is perfectly clear and my thoughts absolutely focused.†Ã‚  Ã‚

Answer the questions for Cases - Essay Example The analysis of these above mentioned three concepts by Build-A-Bear executives enables them to devise effective innovative strategies and plans that fulfill all the basic demands of their clients while simultaneously resulting in increased brand awareness, customer satisfaction and loyalty. The Build-A-Bear workshop actually believes in selling an experience or personalized entertainment to its clients than just selling an ordinary product or a service for some money. Build-A-Bear is actually a workshop that allows preteens to create their teddy bears through a step-by-step production process. The first step is called â€Å"Choose me† in which a child pick an unstuffed animal followed by a second stage known as â€Å"Stuff me† in which a child a child operates a foot pedal that blows in the amount of fluff. Third stage â€Å"Hear me† is about including a voice box followed by a â€Å"Stitch me† stage in which the animal is stitched. The last two stages are known as â€Å"Dress me† and â€Å"Name me† stages in which a child has to cloth his or her animal and finally give it a nick name of their choice respectively. This workshop actually shares adorable memories of creating and preparing an animal in exchange of money. The entir e process is not only enjoyable but it is being remembered by young that later compels to try this workshop again and again. The marketing management concept of Product Development best describes the Build-a-Bear workshop. This concept is actually a business growth strategy that aims to generate excessive revenues by offering new products to existing group of customers. The additions and offerings of new products such as mini-scooters, mascot bears, in-store galleries of bear-sized furniture, spider costumes and sequined purses based on innovative ideas of customers greatly contributed in company’s success and goal accomplishment. Furthermore, the workshop is coming up with further innovations,

Statistics 401 Mod 4 SLP - Regression Analysis Coursework

Statistics 401 Mod 4 SLP - Regression Analysis - Coursework Example The points so formed when the variable values of SAL are plotted against the variable values of the DJIA would have a line of best fit which can be attached to a specific mathematical formula. The mathematical formulae might be linear, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial, moving average and the like. By making use of this formulae, it would be possible to make predictions of other values of the variable SAL and the variable values of the DJIA given the corresponding variable values. Below is a copy of the data that I have collected to date:- SEX AGE SAL(K) DJIA 1 39 23 14 2 29 33 16 2 18 32 16 1 21 54 12 1 50 48 18 2 49 37 16 1 62 70 15 2 23 23 12 1 20 36 13 1 30 35 14 2 32 21 11 1 48 55 16 This data forms a regression pattern and indeed can be used for the prediction of a corresponding element of the data given one. My stock's closing price can be determined from the closing value of the DJIA. The null hypothesis of this distribution is that â€Å"My stock's closing price cannot b e determined from the closing value of the DJIA†. It is usually a statement in negation form which this one is precisely. On the other hand, the alternative hypothesis is that; â€Å"My stock's closing price can be determined from the closing value of the DJIA†. ... In the otherwise case, then the null hypothesis is not right and the alternative hypothesis is taken as the right resolution. I computed a simple regression using the values of the SAL variables as the Y- value and the values of the DJIA variables as the X- values. By so doing, I found the regression results as shown in the screen short below. As can be seen from the results, their indeed is a very slight relationship between My stock's closing price and the closing value of the DJIA. The p-value from the results is very large as it is 2.8. this p- value is much larger than the acceptable value of 0.5. It establishes that indeed the null hypothesis is true. In that regard, I can comfortably say that to some great extent, My stock's closing price cannot be determined from the closing value of the DJIA. This implies that other mechanisms have to be employed in an effort to establish my stock's closing price. REFERENCES Soper, H.E., Young, A.W., Cave, B.M., Lee, A., Pearson, K. (1917). Adaptive Strategy and Business Sustainability Essay

Adaptive Strategy and Business Sustainability - Essay Example The changes in the environmental conditions necessitate changes in the strategies made. The adaptability to the environment changes is essential for the stability of the operations. The environment or the environmental changes provide opportunities as well as pose threats. The opportunities and the threats are analyzed in relation to the strengths and weaknesses in the system and organization. The key features of the Burgelman’s 3 stage model deals with the adaptive strategies which are useful in understanding the process and dynamics associated with the strategic decision making in an increasingly fast paced business environments. The ANZ Banking Group Limited is a leading company in banking and financial service sector in Australia and New Zeeland. To lend focus to the study, we have considered all the recent major developments in the operations of the company in relation to application of the conceptual framework. The main arguments are related to application of technology in the business and expansion activities of the company which have direct impact on the growth. Based on the analysis and assessment, conclusion is arrived at as to how successful the organization has been in decision making by applying the conceptual frameworks associated with induced and autonomous strategy and other features of the model. Failure to adapt to the developments in the technological front in the initial stages has been rectified through strategic management decisions later. However, its expansion strategy is not in the right direction and needs to be reoriented. Based on the analysis, it is recommended that the expansion activities should not be restricted to a particular region by stating reasons for the proposal. The company’s expansion strategy focusing mainly on Asian countries needs to be revisited as it should be on global basis. In the framework called as evolutionary organization theory, decision making towards adaptive strategy relevant to stakeholders, requires the conceptual understanding of the environmental changes that are continuously taking place. This enables the management to evolve conceptual framework incorporating autonomous initiatives and other relevant features for applying an appropriate model. Strategic planning in any setup is a dynamic process and it is susceptible to alterations or modifications in tune with the environmental factors which could be internal or external.    â€Å"While process research proliferated into a diverse field, its founding concern was to confront the rational actor model or choice perspective, with a more collective and socialized view of strategy making† (Schmid et al, 2010, p. 146) The strategies of adaptability for operations in tune with the changing conditions in the environment give stability to the enterprise. In this paper the application of strategy,

The Process of Analyzing the Concept Essay Example for Free

The Process of Analyzing the Concept Essay Introduction This analysis is based on Apple Inc. case study in which the strategic management is analyzed. In the process of analyzing this concept, the article also indentifies the issues and problems as they are presented together with the identification of the major issues surrounding the organization and individuals that are involved with the Apple Inc. Alternative course of action is addressed together with the recommendation that is based on the analysis. Understanding strategic management Through strategic management, a series of moves are developed and executed with an aim of enhancing the organization to be successful in the current situation and also in the future. As the Apple Inc aggressive history is analyzed, a slew of examples are unveiled with an illustration of the irreproducible ability in the effort to have an adoption as well as own market creation. Apple’s strategic management The success of Apple Inc. has been based on its ability to integrate into its model of business operation a management that is strategic. Through strategic management diligent involvement, Apple Inc. has been able to ensure that it is not maneuvered; a strategy that has enabled the company for the past 3 decades to emerge as successful in the competition. However, believing that Apple Inc. has not gone through some setbacks would be illogical. In fact, this is one of the companies that have their good testimony of how the tread of emerging as successful in an already established market can be challenging. However, Apple Inc. has been able to maintain a steady pace as it makes effort to continue with the market analysis, which has been enhanced through having a strategic plan that has been implemented properly, and through capitalizing on strengths that have been highlighted, the analysis has indentified. In the philosophy simple terms, the strategic management is perceived to be basically important to every leading business in any sector of the economy. A model example happens to be presented by Apple Inc. on how the strategic management incorporation can assist in making a firm to successfully be able to meet its expectations and objectives (Yoffie and Slind, 2008). Through the strategic management development, Apple Inc. has benefited in many ways despite the challenges that have been witnessed in the process. Emerging as an industrial giant in the modern business is not an easily achievable goal, but will require a strategy in place that clears the path to success. Internal growth has in one way or the other enhanced the competitive growth of Apple Inc. and through maintaining an aggressive business tread, its importance has been realized in the lucrative success that has been enjoyed by Apple Inc (HBSWK, 2004). In technology, Apple Inc. has advanced from the initial computer industry to involvement of the peripherals which has been based on its products and services that have been on a wide scope. The Apple’s mission highlights a company that is with no doubt in the process of revolving the technology industry. The short term goals of Apple have not been well defined, which presents one of the major shortcomings Of Apple Inc’s strategies. Due to its major goal which has in the past been aimed at ensuring that the customers are provided with the best personal computers globally, finding other specific objectives has proved difficult to Apple. Of late, it has been realized that due to the modern emerging competition, Apple Inc. has continued losing its customers to the alternative companies that are offering their products at a lower market price, especially in the iPod music; this has strongly been attributed to the increasing hackers of the code and the piracy. Other challenges facing has been failure to draw a specific target to a customer group that is focused and failing to take advantage of the customers that already exist. Product integration failure coupled with the technologies that are available readily has been another challenge that has continued to establish it self into this company, which has been critical its success. These problems have however not been very critical to the business. The inability of Apple Inc. to be comparable to other companies has been based on the fact that Apple has not been specializing in one product scope , thus providing a more complicated scope of products. This can be an advantage as well as well as a disadvantage. Looking at Apple Inc. initial mission, the specification has been based on the computer development. With a new product development (consider the iPhone), a new mission was redefined, leaving uncertainty in evaluation of Apples initial goal (Freedman, 1998). Is it a company which has found opportunities in the market that is appropriate resulting to incorporation or is it a company that has from the onset been aimed at clearly known goals? Recommendation Apple Inc. has enjoyed success of growth in the market through development of products that have been widely accepted. The company however needs to improvise its technology and products to eliminate the problem that it has faced involving loss of its customers to the competitors. The identification of a specific group of customers would be very relevant in the process of ensuring certainty of existence in the market. The introduction of iPhone for example targeted the category of young men; a group which is likely to be very dynamic and slippery to new technology. Having a specific group of customer will thus enable Apple Inc. to progress with a strategy that will result in continuous market of its products. Just like any other company, Apple Inc. is prone to dynamic business environment and the appropriate strategic management is what is required if the business has not only to exist in the market, but also result in continuous profits. Intrusion Detection System Case Study

Intrusion Detection System Case Study Abstract Intrusion Detection system (IDS) has become powerful to provide security against the attack. It will help us to identify the deterring and deflecting malicious attacks over the network [1]. To remove all these problem regarding to security has been removed by this paper. In this paper we will go through the theoretical basis for intrusion detection. A distributed intrusion detection system based on agents and on multi agents based distributed intrusion detection also discussed in this paper. Some string matching algorithm are also used for the intrusion detection system. Keywords Distributed Intrusion Detection System; Agents; Multi Agents. 1. Introduction In the introduction of this paper, we are concerning the string matching algorithm in intrusion detection algorithm. In further we will see how to use the algorithm in IDS. String matching algorithm provides the solution to the problem of Intrusion detection. This algorithm will help us to detect the suspicious attack. Bad Character Heuristics The bad character heuristics [2] is very similar to the Boyer Moore string algorithm before. In this algorithm the string is divided into n number of character. Then the message is to be checked to remove the malicious attacks. In this algorithm it will check the first character of a string which is to be entered in a message. If that string is to be considered wrong that means there is some attack and the whole message is not to be considered whether it is right. The problem regarding to this is that it can easily hide the default part in the strings. Aho-Corasick:-Aho-corasick Algorithm is also used to remove the limitation of pervious algorithm. In this algorithm Aho-Corasick [2] make a algorithm as a tree structure. In this there is current node such as a message which to be checked, then if there is a matching node found in the testing than for that other node is to be made. Then after that if any other current node is being tested and if any problem is matched to the present node then the other string is to be tested. SFK Search In SFK search algorithm [2] in this there is a sibling node or the text cases are being present in the form of sibling. So that the current node is being tested by the sibling node ,then at that point the detection is being found ,then it will be added to the sibling node. Otherwise the next node will be tested. By using this algorithm we can find an efficient result. Wu-Manber This algorithm was developed by Wu-Manber [2] in this the limitation of bad character heuristics algorithm is being removed. In this algorithm the shift and hash two table are made to make the detection easy. In this there is character set in the shift table then it will be c be checked in the first table if the defect is found then it is move to the second table. 2. Problem in String Matching Algorithm Some problems are discussed here:- Snort:-Snort uses a set of rules that being derived by a attacks or other defects [2]. The rules are being made by the expert .If the condition is being satisfied then the action is being applied. Snort is a best practices and knowledge of the internet. Snort is a method through which some problem can be removed. In snort there is problem that the use of internet increases, then the definition of snort also increases. In this the use of snort increases so that the database also being very loaded so that there is a complexity in the data base. Due to this the speed of the snort database will decreases. 3. Agent Based Intrusion Detection System To use agent in the intrusion detection system there are some problem which we discussed here:- a) Real time of the intrusion detection and response is not so good [3]. b) If we make the centralized database and all the collective information is sent to that host then there should be overloading [3]. C) If some new hosts are added in the centralized database then the load increases [3]. d) Flexibility of system is not so good. e) Lack of co-operation between different intrusion detection system. To remove this problem there is agent based intrusion detection system used. 1. Agent-Agent is a self-adaptable. Intelligent and collaborative. In this the one is agent interact with the other agent. There are two type of agent: (a)Static agent:-static agent is proposed by the agent technology. In this which platform is being made it is being final, no changes should be made [3]. (b)Mobile agent:- It is capable to move from one node to another network [3] . 3.Working of Distributed Intrusion Detection Based On Agent:- Some merits of agent technology in this paper we will discussed the distributed intrusion detection based on agents [3] . Some parts are: Manage agent, Host Agent, Net Agent .Manage Agent include Mobile Agent Dispatcher (MAD), Learn Agent, Update Agent. -Static Agents are Net Agent and Learn Agent. -Mobile Agents are Manage Agent and Update Agent. In this the data will first checked by the Host Agent and Net Agent. They will detect the suspicious activity found in the data. Then it will send to the manage agent it will check the list in Mobile Agent Dispatcher which attack the host list and the Manage agent move to all the agent to find the similar attack. If mobile agent and and other agent found the threat then it will sent and inform to the Learn Agent which have the learning ability and Learning agent will update to the VHL. So the database is update and checks the other threat. Figure 1, Architecture of Distributed IDS Based on Agents [3]. 4. Distributed Intrusion Detection System On multi-agent In Distributed intrusion detection system only one agent is used to detect the suspicious attack. But the multi-agent it will helpful to find the suspicious attack [4]. (a)Problem:-Some problems are in multi-agent Distributed Intrusion Detection System [4] :- 1) Intrusion Detection cant test entire packet. 2) Signature Database update is not be done timely. 3) It is a single detection. 4) IT cannot interoperate the Intrusion Detection. 5) Intrusion Detection System and other network security cannot be interoperating. (b) Advantages:-some advantages are of Multi-agent are: 1. Intrusion Detection System based on multi-agent technology has a good independent, flexible, scalability [4]. 2. It will use top-down control mechanism which will work to prevent the damage [4]. 3. Each agent can inspect the system to ensure its safety. If it will lose the function, it will send its first message to the upper and then upper will restore the work[4]. 4. Agent analysis application software to protect a number of applications. Use the integrity analysis technology to make detection accurate [4]. (C) Working:- In this Multi-agent based IDS can monitor a analysis network and provide the accurate detection with improve speed. In this there is data collection agent which is configured according to network rate, data encryption etc, parameters. There is a data analysis agent which is based on expert system, state analysis and attacking tree analysis, data analysis agent can achieve high detection rate. There is communication agent which is the main part of multi-agent based IDS.IT must be configured to provide reliable security mechanism. There is a also a center agent which handle those condition that are not handled by analysis agent [4]. 5. Conclusion We have study the most common used String Matching Algorithm that are Bad Character heuristics, Aho-corasick, SFK search, WU-manber and also study the Intrusion detection in distributed computing that are based on agent and multi-agents. We have found that multi-agent based intrusion detection system can improve detection accuracy and detection speed and enhance the systems on security. We also found that Distributed Intrusion Detection Based on Agents and Multi Agents is the Reliable and more efficient than other IDS available Today. In future it also has scope for networks. 6. Martin Luther King Jr. :: Biography

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born at noon Tuesday, January 15, 1929, at his home in Atlanta, Georgia. He was first named Michael Luther King Jr., and later changed his name to Martin, after his father. He was the first son and second child born to the reverend Martin Luther King, Sr., and Alberta Williams King, a schoolteacher.Growing up as an African American in Georgia, Martin experienced and suffered discrimination throughout his boyhood. This discrimination against black people was cruel and demoralizing. Martin Luther King Jr. told once of an experience he had riding a bus with his schoolteacher from Macon to Atlanta, "the driver started cursing us out and calling us black sons of bitches. I decided not to move at all, but my teacher pointed out that we must obey the law. So we got up and stood in the aisle the whole 90 miles to Atlanta. It was a night I'll never forget. I don't think I have ever been so deeply angry in my life."There were many discriminatory laws in the South. They had certain restaurants that they were allowed to eat in, separate water-fountains, separate bathrooms. Just about everything you can think of was segregated. One of his first experiences was with the curtains that were used on the dining cars of trains to separate the whites from the blacks. This incident struck King pretty hard, he said, "I felt just it as if a curtain had come down across my whole life. The insult of it I will never forget."King was an extremely bright student and skipped right through his high school years and entered Atlanta's Negro Morehouse College at age 15. His father encouraged him to study ministry, while he had his heart set on medicine or law. King was embarrassed of his own religion. He didn't understand what all the shouting and stamping was all about. But after reading and rereading Thoreau's essay, "Civil Disobedience," he came to the conclusion that the only way he could bring about his ideas on social protest was through ministry. At Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, King studied the writings and teachings of many philosophers, such as Hegel and Kant, but the person that impressed him the most was Mohandas Gandhi, and his beliefs in a nonviolent protest.

Events Leading Up To Martin Luthers Excommunication :: essays research papers fc

Martin Luther was the founder of the Protestant church. Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben in the province of Saxony. His view of Christianity started what is called the Protestant Reformation in Germany. Luther sought out to inform people of what he thought were the churches wrongdoings. The resistance of the church called the Counter Catholic Reformation permanently divided western Christianity. Luther was raised (for the most part) in Mansfield. His mother and father were so cruel and abusive his childhood was almost non-existent, which later in life caused him to run away to a monastery and become a monk. He studied at Eisanbach and Madgeburg and later studied at the university of Erfurt. The reasons Luther unexpectiantly became a monk are conflicting and could be argued upon. Luther himself said, "When I was terror stricken and overwhelmed by the fear of impending death, I made an involuntary and forced vow". There are many legends explaining this statement but nobody knows for sure. The main reason Luther went deeper into his religious life was that he felt he would never earn his salvation. He didn't feel that all the prayer, sacraments, and the good deed doing were enough. Therefore Luther did not think he could satisfy such a judging god, which meant damnation. Soon after entering the religious life he became an Augustian monk and entered the Augustian monastery at Erfurt on July 17, 1505. In 1512 Luther earned his doctorate in theology and became the professor of biblical literature at Wittenberg University. Luther took his religious vocation very seriously and spent much of his time reading the bible, which lead him to question the Roman Catholic Church. He realized man was at a disadvantage because our weaknesses force us to be burdened with sin. He said humans could not earn salvation by doing good deeds or performing holy acts instead we can earn it with faith in Jesus alone. Believing this, Luther was influenced to write the ninety-five theses along with him strongly opposing the sale of indulgences which are documents freeing sinners of punishment after death. After posting up the ninety-five theses on the castle churches door on October 31st, 1517, Luther sent a copy of the theses and an explanation to the Arch Bishop. The bishop sent it to his councilors at Aschaffenburge. The council was unanimous that Luther was a heretical man and proceedings against him should be taken.

Zuma Beach Essay -- Descriptive Essay About A Place

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It was a sunny Friday afternoon when I decided to take my observations with me out into the world. I find that my imagination wanders off on its own and takes trips to the ocean without me so I figured my body had some catching up to do. With a snap of my fingers and a short ride through the canyon I found myself at my childhood playground, Zuma Beach. Without hesitation I laid my towel down upon the tiny grains and chips of rocks that the oceans might has turned into sand over the years. I took a moment to put my life on hold and gaze at what nature had to offer to me. I reflected upon all of the other places I could have been instead of standing with my toes curling in the warm sandy beach and smiled in appreciation of my situation.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It was perfect weather out for a day at the beach. The clear sky didn’t have a single cloud to block the rays of the radiant sun. I could sense the feeling of ultra relaxation from the outstretched deep blue canopy above and the penetrating warmth that emanated from the sky and wrapped around my skin like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. Every once in a while a cool breeze would pass by and ease away the sun’s intense heat bath for brief moment. I could feel grains of sand gently brush over the top of my feet with each gust of wind. The crisp ocean wind flowed through my nasal cavity and stung the inside of my nose. My lungs quivered in surprise at how light and fresh the air was since it was not drudgingly thick with smog or other pollutants. As the salty smell of the water hit my nose, I thought about all the time I had spent waiting in anticipation to get that first refreshing whiff of ocean air that confirmed arrival and signaled t he beginning of another exceptional beach experience.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I closed my eyes for a second to take in what I could observe through my auditory senses. The laughter of children and families enjoying the summer day brought a smile to my face as they smoothed the walls of their sand fortresses and played football in the sand. I could hear the ball churn through the air as the laces spun rhythmically from the spiral that left one hand and landed with a quiet thud as it found its way to the intended receiver. The dampened sounds of feet digging into sand were all around me from other visitors coming to plot their spot of temporary beach front residence for the afternoon. I could... ...onger alone in the water. It was humbling to see that there was so much going on around me that I did not know about. Suddenly, the water parted and the nose of a dolphin appeared. He was moving with such speed his whole body came out of the water like a cannon and followed the shape of a perfect arc as it cut through the atmosphere. His skin glistened in mid-air and looked like a slippery mirror in the hot summer sun. Mist sprayed from his tail as he stretched out in the air, and he shook it in a friendly manner greeting all of us watching. Then with a splash he disappeared back under the water and departed just as quickly as he appeared.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Every time I go to the beach I always walk away with a memorable experience. I can still remember meeting my friends there every summer Thursday when I was a child. Nothing about this place has changed. I still eat sandwiches that crunch with every bite from tiny grains of sand that get captured between the meats. I can still lie out on my towel and have good conversation with buddies that float us away to the times when we couldn’t even drive. This is a place of escape. I can’t wait to see what adventures will come to me the next time.

Cultural Influences on Social Cognition and Behavior Essay

There was once a time when I met a Filipino family in the park. The most famous hospitality of Filipinos was showed to me. They have invited me to join them for snacks — something that a typical American would not do even to fellow American. However, these people became friendly to me even though they know that I am not among their own race. I was able to identify with them because I have experienced the real essence of having a family, something I am not seeing in most American families. With that encounter, they have thought me to also be concern with other people. More than that, they have showed me that we can unite amid cultural differences and that we can trust people even at the first meeting; and through that we can have connections. I found this influences to easy come to my senses and being because I have been observing families in my own community and I have not found anyone or family as hospitable as them. That is because I was able to identify with them. I was vulnerable because it was my first time to experience such hospitability from other people who possess different culture other than what I have been practicing. Americans have become very individualistic and have failed to show such culture to other people even in our own kind. I was able to process my thoughts and feelings in terms of dealing with other cultures because I have experienced another culture first hand, more than what I can read from books and periodicals. What I have experienced and learned through the encounter is definitely a positive influence. Because their culture has encouraged me to learn more about other cultures and practices of other people and they have helped me understand the differences of cultures. Reference Huitt, W. (2006). Ab105 Organizational Behavior Critical Thinking

AB105 Organizational Behavior Critical Thinking The Management of Organizational Justice By Russell Cropanzano, David E. Bowen, and Stephen W. Gilliland Summary of the key issues This paper has addressed the organizational justice from various aspects and provided recommendations to enhance the fairness in the managerial activities. Firstly, it has discussed the importance of justice in workgroup from its long-range benefits, social and ethical considerations. Secondly, the authors analyzed the three components of organizational justice, namely distributive, procedural and interactional justice in details to highlight the differences between the three in business activities. Next, the paper summarized the influences of organizational justice and these include enhanced trust and commitment, improved job performance, more helpful organizational citizenship behavior, as well as greater customer satisfaction and loyalty. Lastly, after identifying the critical significance of organizational justice in building a company’s identity, recommendations on how to enhance the fairness in managerial activities are proposed. The authors had cited examples from several past studies and discussed from five angles which are hiring, performance appraisal, reward systems, conflict management and downsizing. Other Theoretical Perspectives on Organizational Justice This paper has mentioned the equity theory which is one of the earliest theories of justice brought by Aristotle. This theory emphasizes that people should be paid in proportion to their contributions. Nevertheless, equity theory focuses more on the distributive justice. Through careful research, there are other perspectives and positions on this issue. Fairness heuristic theory Fairness heuristic theory is concerned with how people react to outcomes of their authorities, and makes some predictions concerning the relationship between perceived fairness of procedures, perceived fairness of outcomes and acceptance of outcomes. This theory highlighted that employees would make decisions about others’ trustworthiness. It also discussed whether one can avoid exploitation by using available information. Uncertainty management theory Uncertainty management theory assumed that people manage uncertainty by using fairness; for instance, receiving information on the reliability of an authority figure may reduce uncertainty about unjust treatment in the future and alleviate doubt about the outcome of a possible figure. Uncertainty theory has explained why people care about justice and how they form justice judgment. This theory has relevant implications as information on managerial decisions should be provided to gain the trust from the employees to enhance procedural justice. Group engagement theory This model explains why and how procedural justice shapes cooperation in groups, organizations and societies. It has established a link between justice and corporation via its several hypotheses, such as the importance of procedures in shaping one’s social identity within a group, and the impact of this social identity on his attitudes, values and behaviors. Group engagement theory has provided insights in organizational justice as managers should treat people fairly to win their corporation. Evidence Assessment In general, the evidence provided in this paper is reliable and well-established. The key issues of the article such as importance of organizational behavior and recommendations on fairness workplace enhancement are thoroughly – discussed. The authors had researched over a wide pool of studies across a time span of 20 years, ensuring the relevance, accuracy and sufficiency of the data. Nonetheless, there are some minor limitations. First of all, little evidence was demonstrated to support the discussion on prescriptive and subjective justice, with mere definition of the two, which in turn affects the completeness of the analysis on organizational justice management. Secondly, the authors mentioned about the external equity in affecting reward system, but no proof was offered to support the claim on the influence on the disparity of salaries from the external marketplace. Lastly, although this paper has detailed coverage on the improved employee organizational behavior by establishing organizational justice, it only focuses on the procedural justice and this coverage is insufficient in my viewpoint. Other research suggest that all the three types of organizational justice have direct relationships on enhancing citizenship behavior as â€Å"trust appears to be an important mediating variable (Konovsky and Pugh, 1994). Organizational justice enhances employee trust, which in turn stimulates the display of citizenship behavior. † Assumption Analysis Several assumptions are identified in the analysis of this paper. This paper assumes that self – interest motives favor equity and people across different age groups, genders, races and education levels will perceive justice similarly (which might not be necessarily valid). Another underlying assumption in the managerial activities is that decision makers will treat the employees with genuineness while undertaking the recommended measures, because the absence of the sincerity will make the employees feel disrespected and manipulated. The influence of different contexts plays a key role in organizational justice as it will affect one’s justice perceptions. Out of all the variables, gender and culture are the main factors. Studies have shown that male’s major concern in reward allocation was protecting their own interests while females’ interests lie on maintaining the welfare of all group members. Furthermore, in a society with emphasis on collectivism, members emphasized more on particularistic principle of need or social status distribution instead of equity, as compared to societies based on individualism. Conclusions, Implications and Consequences This article has provided a detailed understanding of organizational justice. In conclusion, injustice in an organization will create problems, leading to inefficiency and unproductivity while justice acts will provide excellent business opportunities and maintain respect and trust within organizations. Therefore, it is advisable to put in efforts in improving distributive, procedural and interactional justice simultaneously in managerial activities. Furthermore, managers could also apply different organizational justice measures according to employees’ various justice perceptions which vary with genders and cultures, in order to reap the maximum benefits from exercising organizational justice in a workplace. Iraq war Essay

Fast food became one of the most danger issues all over the world , people are used to eat fast food almost everyday as they see it quicker and more delicious than any other healthy food. People do not know how much they are harming themselves by eating junk food , it leads to a lot of diseases and illness because bodies will be deprived from the healthy food but by eating healthy food people will strength their health. Fast food has unhealthy impact on people’s body but it also remains extremely popular. Government should ban fast food to protect people’s health . there are many reasons why fast food should be banned. This paper will discuss the main reason that leads to overuse fast food and the reasons why fast food should be banned . The main reason that leads to overuse fast food is the frequent advertisements on televisions (2013,04. should fast food advertisement be banned. Retrieved 04,2013) The more they will talk about fast food on television , the more people and children will be forced to buy junk food and this will cause a lot of diseases like the increase of cholesterol , obesity , hypertension, and cancer , those advertisements help parents to consume more fast food and this will apply to children as they spend a lot of time watching the television and learning new behaviors (2012.06 fast food marketing to children. The banning of fast food advertisements will help to ban fast food all over the world as it will have a positive effect towards financial and health problems. The first reason why fast food should be banned is that leads to social problems while eating away from their homes almost everyday because they  Getused to eat fast food sothey became not boned enough with their family and siblings, teenagers see that it is very smart when they go to fast food restaurant with their friends but sadly they do not know how they harm themselves every lunch (2011,01 fastfood. The second reason why fast food should be banned is that leads to health problems like obesity.billions of dollars are spent on buying fast food , so parents became lazy to provide their children essential and important nutrients they need (2011,02 how fast food affects child obesity. Retrieved from 02,2011) children became more overweight because fast food contains a high rate of sugar , salts and fats. (his children are not only affected physically but emotionally and mentally as it also leads to psychological problems like depression and may lead to other dangerous actions. Parents should realize the amount of damage they are causing their children by letting them eating a high rate of fast food to support and protect their kids. Fast food became the most dangerous issue all over the world as it has several problems like the social , health ,financial and psychological problems and the main cause of spreading fast food and encourage people to over use junk food is the high percentage of advertisements that leads to death. That is why fast food should be totally and completely banned .

Anabolic Steroids Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Anabolic Steroids - Essay Example While some athletes like Michael Johnson, a sprinter who won a couple of gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, love pressure and enjoy it, others like Martina Novratilova, a Wimbledon champion find it difficult to handle pressure (The Creative Athelete, n.d.). Pressure arises because of the desire to win, to meet the expectations of the spectators and sponsors and also to remain in sports. It is because of the pressure to perform that some sportsmen resort to other methods of building their strength and endurance, mainly drugs. The most commonly used drugs in sports are erthropoietin and anabolic steroids. Drug associations all over the world have banned these drugs and intake of these drugs in any form amounts to cheating. These drugs can be detected easily by various modern tests. This article gives a crisp purview about anabolic steroids. Young athletes who aspire to become great heroes must know about the disadvantages of these drugs so that they dont take the easier route to success. Anabolic steroids are a class of synthetic steroid hormones that are related to testosterone. When administered into the body, they cause many physiological effects which are mainly anabolic in nature. The effects include increased synthesis of protein and increased appetite. Increased protein synthesis results in increased muscle mass and strength and increased bone growth. Anabolic steroids also have virilising androgenic properties and thus can cause increase in masculine features like growth of vocal cords and body hair. It is for these reasons that these drugs are popularly known as anabolic-androgenic steroids or AAS. Due to the muscle building properties of these drugs, there is a tendency for sportsmen and body builders to take them. Worldwide, most of the sports bodies have banned the usage of these drugs and intake of these hormones is considered illegal and called doping. Medically, anabolic steroids have an important role in the treatment of osteoporosis,

ASSESSMENT ITEM 1, GEO 105 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

ASSESSMENT ITEM 1, GEO 105 - Essay Example The Great Dividing Range stretching almost the whole length of the eastern continent separates the Outback from a narrow fertile strip on the east coast, where most of the country’s population is clustered; as also in the south-east region of the continent. Vast desert areas lie in Western Australia and in parts of central Australia. The country has a wide range of physical environments: landforms, geology, soils, climate, temperatures, atmosphere, water resources, rivers, coastlines, and rainfall. The native flora and fauna form the biological environment. In this assignment, for the comparative study of the physical and biological environmental features of two different places in Australia: one urban and one rural, the city of Perth and the Riverina area respectively have been selected. Perth is the only large city of over a million people, in the entire West Coast. It is the capital of Western Australia, which covers one-third of the continent. Most of the state’s land area is preserved in its pristine and natural form; as it is home to less than 10% of the continent’s population. Western Australia is one of the best eco-tourism destinations in the world: with various oceanic features like tropical islands, coral reef systems and dolphins in the sea waters, alongside towering forests and carpets of wild flowers (Ashworth, et al, 2004: p.89). Riverina Region: This agricultural and rural area lies in the southern part of New South Wales, to the north of Victoria. According to Swaffar, et al(2002: p.193), the Murray River which forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria, is one of the nation’s longest rivers, stretching nearly 1000 km from the Snowy Mountains to Wentworth where it merges with the Darling River (the longest river in Australia), near the border with South Australia. In recent years, these mighty rivers have

Can be on anything to do with microbiology (you can chose the topic) Article - 1

Can be on anything to do with microbiology (you can chose the topic) - Article Example The greatest microbial risks are because of ingestion of water contaminated with animal or human feces. Other sources of contamination are waste water discharges. Children under 5 years of age are the most affected population with these infectious diseases. Common diseases which are transmissible by water are cholera, typhoid and bacillary dysentery. Cholera is caused by gram negative rods Vibrio cholerae which are facultative anerobes. The organisms are aquatic bacteria and their distribution depends on sodium and temperature of the water. The incubation period of the disease is 1-3 days and the disease is characterised by acute and intense diarrhoea leading to dehydration. Cholera is associated with high mortality if not treated timely. Infection due to Vibrio cholera is dependent on adhesion of the cells of the bacteria to the mucous membrane of the intestine and production of cholera toxin. Cholera is very famous for its pandemics. The genes responsible for toxin production are h arbored in the CTX? segment (7–9.7 kb) of the chromosome. The strains of the organism are common in the environment, especially is estuaries. Non-culturable but viable bacteria are responsible for episodic nature and the sudden appearance of violent cholera outbreaks, followed by a rapid slowing down.

Should base level funding for critical infrastructure protection Research Paper

Should base level funding for critical infrastructure protection against foreign terrorists organizations include domestic (internal) threats - Research Paper Example ously increased their capacities in terms of sophistication and potential damage, there is need to take necessary steps to guard key infrastructures both private- and publicly owned against these developments. In order to effectively tackle cases of terroristic attacks against CI, base level funding for protection against foreign terrorist organizations should include domestic or internal threats. Indeed in today’s modern world, without critical infrastructure a society cannot function optimally. In fact, it is only in times of peace and relative security that critical infrastructures are characteristically, for granted taken. It must however be appreciated that when one critical infrastructure is annihilated, the entire nation somehow feels the effects of the loss (ITAC, 2006). In some cases, the loss may be as great in magnitude as to affect one or more countries significantly. Owing to their significance, critical infrastructures are always naturally become vulnerable targets for terrorists – foreign or those that exist within the nation’s borders (ITAC, 2006). It is in appreciation of this fact that the government in conjunction with its citizens and other stakeholders must always ensure that these infrastructures remain secure and function properly. In the US, currently, there is no clear policy as to how base level funding should be used. This therefore means that in cases of need, funding meant for foreign terrorist protection could be used to solve issues related to domestic threats. While terrorist gangs have often resorted to using bombs and other violent methods, it must be appreciated that they are likely to change tactics soon or later. Instead of engaging in physical combat, terrorists may opt to target information systems and other cyber assets in an unprecedented way. This could of course have a devastating effect since most of the country’s critical infrastructure is run or controlled by computers which in most cases are networked (ITAC,

The impact( positive and negative) on the customer relationship Essay

The impact( positive and negative) on the customer relationship management in the hospitality and tourism - Essay Example 221) stated that CRM has many definitions depending on different people and their industry and in most cases it is also referred to as relationship marketing. CRM can be defined as a marketing method that allows a company or an organization to use its available resources to establish a lasting relationship with customers, thus gaining a competitive advantage compared to its competitors (Mohammed & Rashid 2012, p.221). It can also be defined as a method of retaining clients using after sales strategies. CRM, if properly implemented, can be suitable for the hospitality and tourism industry considering that hotels and other industry players get lots of information regarding their clients. An effective CRM programme should ensure that the customers get the best experience, decrease management cost, source new customers and increase profitability (Sotoudeh 2006, p.1). This paper will critically look at  the impact of the customer relationship management in the hospitality and tourism. A dvantages Marketing CRM is an activity that helps to source for customers and retaining them (Ku 2010, p. 1085). CRM focuses more on retaining existing customers for repurchase than recruiting new customers as well as increasing client base through referrals from the existing clients. In most cases, companies use the available resources such as the employees, technologies and their databases to set up this system. These methods are cheaper than advertising and marketing to new customers. It ensures that the company grows their customer from the existing customer base. CRM can also help to indentify the lost customers or those that are almost moving out, to ensure they are won back. Long lasting relationship also helps to minimize the effects of the competition through word of mouth by their customers. They benefit financially due to a lower marketing cost. Ensuring Customer Satisfaction Customers should get value for their money from the services paid for. Repeat customers feel atta ched to the service providers and thus are able to bond with companies’ employees. The existing database can be analysed by the company to improve the services offered. In the hospitality sector, there is direct interaction between the company or its employees and the customers as they deliver their services. Proper interaction helps service providers understand their customers and thus help them develop proper plans that suit the customer’s needs. Having a direct interaction helps to develop trust between the involved parties. According to the study by Hashem (2012, p. 132) in Jordan, most hotels that use CRM has higher customer satisfaction. Relationship marketing together with CRM translates to repeat customers and customer loyalty (Shirazi & Som 2011, p. 82). Increase in Revenue Well designed CRM should help a firm reduce cost and increase revenue by enhancing client loyalty. It helps to put together information from within and without the organization. This inform ation can be used by the company to understand the market trends and specific customers’ needs. CRM helps to ensure customer satisfaction and, therefore, long term relationship. Company’s personnel interact directly with the consumers and their actions impact directly the customers (Kattara et al. 2008, p. 310). Good service by the employees leads to

Annotated Bibliography for Preventive Computer Medicine

For Preventive Computer Medicine - Annotated Bibliography Example He recommends that the enhanced features and additional protections offered by paid-for versions are worth the extra money. One reason consumers don’t protect their computers properly is that they feel shelling out money for anti-virus software is a scam or too painful on the budget, so this article supports my recommendation of using paid-for scanning software. This is an extremely short article but does make some interesting recommendations, such as carefully researching freeware, dashboard add-ons, and screensavers before downloading them. If the company does not pass the research test or other users have experienced problems, those programs should be avoided. Garcia recommends taking a proactive approach to infections by using the most cutting-edge software to prevent rather than cure computer infections. He notes that integrated systems are probably better than standalone software. This article helps to shape my recommendation that preventing computer problems is an overall approach, even though that requires more attention and management from the end user. A series of good tips for avoiding crashes, bugs and virus problems, including the typical advice of using the most up to date antivirus software, carefully checking all incoming files and links, and creating system backups. Good basic support opinion for several points in my essay. Short article containing almost the same tips as several others, but does give the web addresses of a few resources that warrant further investigation for this essay such as the US Department of Energy’s Hoaxbusters page and the Computer Associates Virus Encyclopedia. Historical background for the beginning of computer virus era. Jelinski presents a simplified overview of the origins of viruses and how to avoid them. This is relevant to my essay because the article presents the same simple advice given for the past 12 years.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND POLITICS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND POLITICS - Essay Example The term of imperialism is usually applied when speaking about such countries as the United Kingdom, the USA, Japan, Italy, Spain and France of the 19th century. In that time these countries were trying to found empires by owning areas in Africa. This process is known as â€Å"the Scramble for Africa†. In his work dated 1916 â€Å"Imperialism, the Highest stage of Capitalism† Lenin wrote about the importance of building the strong capitalist empire that will treat other nations and will have enough power to take decisions on the world arena. According to him, imperialism implies the domination of the developed countries over the underdeveloped ones (such as African counties). Though it must be mentioned that empire-building and the desire to capture other lands has always been in the history, the Lenin’s imperialism was a specific one because of the capitalist basis. Capitalism is founded on the idea that all the power is possessed by private owners and capital s tands for the key element in the economic system. Within the turn of the 19th century the capitalism in such countries as France, Japan, the USA and the UK was characterized by a great number of monopolies. Lenin wrote in his manifest that the small privately owned companies that were the key factor of the nation prosperity according to Karl Marx were to be replaced by the big monopolies that would have fewer owners, and in other words, fewer people controlling it. Such giants of production or other business controlled the whole nation with the help of the power that capital gave to them. The thing is that the dominant elements of the economy â€Å"capital, land and wealth were concentrated in the hands of the few† (Greene, 1970). Lenin wrote: "if it was necessary to give the briefest possible definition of imperialism, we should have to say that imperialism is the monopoly stage of capitalism" (Greene, 1970). So, when the economy of one country strives for monopoly, it leads to the decrease of competition. In a while such situation in one state can project to the international arena. In order to secure the power, capital and their ownership those few people needed the support of the state. Any security implies heavy spending on military forces. According to Lenin’s theory, the monopolization of the capital leads to the army strengthening. The rate of a country’s security depended on its army and navy forces, and it in its turn depended on the industrial production that provided these departments. As a result the interests of monopolies and state linked together and there appeared tough interdependence. According to Bukharin, the counterpart of Lenin, the monopolization of economy leads to its internationalization, though this internationalization was to be slowed by the armed nations that protected their ownership and capital violently. Therefore, there was the necessity for a state to cooperate with other countries, but it was to be done carefully in order not to risk the state security. As Lenin explained, "Capitalism's transition to the stage of monopoly capitalism, to finance capital, is connected with the intensification of the struggle for the partitioning of the world" (Warren, 1980). As mentioned above the new wave of imperialism based on capitalism was founded on the scramble for weak counties in order to provide

Discuss Stevensons presentation of the charchacter of Mr Hyde in the novel Essay Example for Free

Discuss Stevensons presentation of the charchacter of Mr Hyde in the novel Essay The Character Mr Hyde, in the book Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is left a mystery to the reader for the majority of this Victorian Gothic Horror. The suspense of this book would have been ever more relevant in Victorian times, due to the menacing and real evil of Jack the Ripper, a serial murderer who preyed the streets of London in the late 1800s. Jack is a person with which through the book, Edward Hyde shares certain characteristics, such as leading a double life. Investigators suspected Jack the Ripper to be a respectable man in daylight hours. They never did catch him. The first initial sighting of this stumping, little man was in the dark and early hours of the morning. This already suggests that Mr Hyde is not quite normal, as stereotypically bad things come out at night, so automatically the reader is intrigued. In addition, you can tell that he is going to be an important factor to the book when he tramples a child like a Juggernaut with no feelings and it is chilling to think what kind of a man does this. The person to witness the preliminary event involving Mr Hyde was Mr Utterson; Mr Jekylls friend and lawyer. In the event, a cheque with Mr Jekylls name on it was handled by Mr Hyde and given to the trampled childs family in the hope that they would keep his mistake a secret. No gentleman but wishes to avoid a scene. First impressions are the basis on which the majority of Hydes character is built, almost as if Stevenson doesnt let you see past Hydes (generally bad) first impressions to a sad creature that ends up weeping like a lost soul. Right at the beginning of the book, when we find Hyde trampling a child, Utterson has already taken a loathing to [his] gentleman at first sight and the ugliness of Hyde brought out the sweat on [him] like running. Then later, a witness to a murder remembers a previous meeting with Hyde, in which she had conceived a dislike for him. Further on in the book the effect Hyde has on people gets stronger as he grows in evil and stature. With his remarkable combination of great muscular activity and great debility of constitutionthis bore some resemblance to incipient rigor, and was accompanied by a marked sinking of the pulse. This quote describes Mr Hydes appearance, and the extent of his deformities. We begin to understand why he avoids daylight and why the public avoid him. There are numerous occasions of people feeling nauseous after meeting Hyde, and few people are unmoved on first meetings with him, Sir Danvers Carew is one of those who remain unmoved, but nothing good comes out of it. In the Carew Murder Case, we begin to understand the depth of Mr Hydes character. This is the first instance in the book where he is compared to an animal or being backward to society by dramatically changing his suspiciously polite mood to ape-like fury. This horrific change resulted in a vicious attack on Sir Carew, the person Hyde was so politely speaking to in the street who also happened to be a famous MP. Moreover, for an MP to be clubbedto the ground by a hailingstorm of blows was a crime of singular ferocity that London was startled by. A maid witnessed this cruel murder from a nearby house and gave Edward Hydes name to the police. The police then searched Hydes house in Soho, a downtrodden area of London that was lived in by the working class, the rooms were furnished with luxury and good taste but the house was in a mess, almost as if had been vandalised. This confirms to the reader that Hyde is a complicated and probably lonely person. There is almost an element of pity towards Hyde from the reader. In the final chapters the anticipation for something climatic to happen is at its largest and as anticipated, the mystery of Edward Hyde is unravelled and we see a somewhat unexpected side to him, although quite understandable because of his general unpredictability. Many questions arise within the reader when the usually brutal creature is found alone and dead in a cabinet as if he was vulnerable. Throughout the book, Edward Hyde is also depicted as being growing and ominous evil and as his inner evil grew he had also grown in stature, and to find him dead instead of the suspectedly murdered Dr Jekyll is certainly a shock to the reader. Many disreputable tales came out of that mans [Mr Hydes] cruelty and the fact he was still roaming the streets was unnerving to those who knew of him, yet he is found to have possibly committed suicide even though he had an immense love of life and fears [Dr Jekylls] power to cut him off by suicide In conclusion, I think that Hyde has been portrayed to be the pure evil of Victorian times and that Robert Louis Stevenson was really writing about the battle between good and evil. For example the times all through the book when Jekyll has had to clear up after Hydes mess (trampling the child was covered up with a cheque) is like the Victorians having to clear up after mistakes in their society and lives. Another example is Hyde being scared that Jekyll could stop him from living, which is saying that in the end good has more power over evil. In the book there is also an element of pity towards Hyde, as if he is the misunderstood character, but I suppose this pity for him could be a trap and in the end you will never see any real good out of him, this is along the lines of what Jekyll said in the final chapter. In this book, Stevenson has focused on Juxtaposition (opposites) and Jekyll and Hydes battle with each other is a metaphor of this. This book was a horror novel in Victorian times, and rightly so, with their obsession with hell and Jack the Ripper still roaming the streets this novel gave them even more reason to fear God and the evils that surround them.

Learning Disabilities in Society Today Essay Example for Free

Learning Disabilities in Society Today Essay The modern society has advanced very much compared to the earlier society, for example of the mid twentieth century. This advancement can be attributed to various technological innovations and inventions that have taken place in the society. The various spheres of change have impacted both positively and negatively on the welfare of the people. This is together with the welfare of those with disabilities. Disability has been and remains to be a major aspect of social inquiries and studies that has been conducted in the society. This is given that the disabled persons are part and parcel of the society. In this regard, the issue of disability as an area of study encompasses various aspects. This is for instance the kind of relationships between disability and work, disability and oppression, disability and education and disability and discrimination among others. In addition, studies on disability have centered on the measures that have been taken or ought to be taken to address the issue. The measures taken range from medical interventions and efforts to change the attitude of the members of the society towards the disabled people. Disability and the Society Today: Overview There are several definitions that have been proposed for the term disability. The definitions depend on the orientation and experiences of the scholar. For example, in law, the term disability can be used to connote a physical or mental impairment of an individual (Shah Priestly, 2009). For the impairment to qualify as a disability, the law requires that it must have a substantial and long term negative effect on the individual’s ability to carry out normal day to day activities (Valentino Skeletonk, 2009). However, not all such conditions qualify as disabilities. For example, individuals with ailments such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and those who are blind or partially sighted are not considered as been disabled. According to the legal definition given above, impairments considered to make an individual disabled include sensory impairments, such as sight and hearing, or mental impairments such as learning disabilities, dyslexia and mental illness (Bradley, Danielson Hallahan, 2002). Some severe disfigurements, for example those affecting limbs and other physical organs, are regarded as a disability. Some conditions that can worsen over time such as multiple scleroses are also regarded as a disability as soon as they are diagnosed, even before they start to affect the individuals day to day activities (Lerner, 2000). There are criteria that have been put in place to determine whether a disability is long term or not. For example, for a disability to de regarded as long term, it must have lasted for at least one year (Bradley et al, 2002). Disabilities that have lasted for less than one year can also be classified as long term. This is when there are sufficient grounds to expect the disability to last for at least one year after its onset (Barnes, Fletcher Fuchs, 2007). For example, a loss of both limbs can be considered as a long term disability even if the loss is barely one month old. Also, for a disability to be regarded as long term, it must be expected to last for the rest of the individuals life (Barnes et al, 2007). As earlier alluded to in this paper, there are several types of disabilities affecting people in the society. These range from physical disability, mental disability among others. Another type of disability that affects people in the society, albeit not so visible, is learning disability. This paper is going to look at learning disabilities within the context of the modern society. A general overview of disability has already been provided to create a context within which learning disability will be located.

Eisenhowers Policies Analysis

Eisenhowers Policies Analysis Jack Sha Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Texas in 1890, raised in Abilene, Kansas; Eisenhower was the third oldest of the seven sons of David Jacob Eisenhower and Ida Elizabeth Stover. He was really good at sports in school and was greatly interested in military history. Eisenhower graduated from Abilene High School in 1909, and after two years of working at different kinds of jobs, he got accepted at the West point and graduated in 1915. Afterwards Eisenhower went into military, and when he was stationed in Fort Sam Houston as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916. Dwight D. Eisenhower, a World War 2 war hero, and a five star General of the Army, also the 34th President of the United States, was not only a remarkable soldier, but also a great president; as shown by his foreign policy, domestic policy and his efforts to achieve world peace during his term. Dwight D. Eisenhower introduced his national security policy â€Å"New Look† in 1953. â€Å"The main elements of the New Look were: maintaining the vitality of the U.S. economy while still building sufficient strength to prosecute the Cold War; relying on nuclear weapons to deter Communist aggression or, if necessary, to fight a war; using the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to carry out secret or covert actions against governments or leaders directly or indirectly responsive to Soviet control; and strengthening allies and winning the friendship of nonaligned governments.† Eisenhower cut the spending on the traditional forces like the land army and the navy, but increased the budget of nuclear projects and the Air Force. Spending on the national security was never below half of the total budget—â€Å"Eisenhower did balance three of the eight federal budgets while he was in the White House.† One successful example of Eisenhower’s foreign policy was â€Å"during his first year in office; Eisenhower told the CIA to solve a problem in Iran that started during President Truman’s presidency. In 1951, the Iranian parliament nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, which is a British corporation that dominates the United Kingdom’s petroleum industry. The British in return put a lot of economic pressure on Iran, which destroyed their finances, but Iran refused to give in. Eisenhower is also worried about that Mossadeghs minded to cooperate with Iranian Communists; and he would eventually take away the power of a substantial anti-Communist, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavialso. In August 1953, the CIA helped to make a revolution against Mossadegh’s government successful, and also restored the power of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavialso. â€Å"In the aftermath of this covert action, new arrangements gave U.S. corporations an equal share with the British in t he Iranian oil industry.† [3] Eisenhower’s domestic policy was also a success, although there were perilous moments when the tension with the Soviet Union was really high, and they were at the brink of war during the 1950s. â€Å"People often remember the Eisenhower years as happy days, a time when Americans did not have to worry about depression or war, as they had in the 1930s and 1940s, or difficult and divisive issues, as they did in the 1960s.† Americans enjoyed the benefits that their soaring economy brought them, more than half of the Americans have a television, and many different kinds of enjoyment popped up. It was a time that Americans was free from the tension of war, people relax and have fun, the cinemas and bars are packed with people, and the latest fashion can be seen everywhere on the streets. In the eyes of the American people, Eisenhower was a great leader and they mostly approve his policies, because he often gets a majority in the votes, sometimes even over 70 percent. â€Å"During the campaign of 1952, Eisenhower condemned the policies of President Truman’s Fair Deal, but he was not like some of his fellow Republican conservatives that hold extreme views to the â€Å"Fair Deal†. These Republicans not only wanted to get rid of the â€Å"Fair Deal†, but also the â€Å"New Deal†, so they can go back to government control of the economy. Eisenhower chose the middle path, which he called the â€Å"Modern Republicanism†. The â€Å"Modern Republicanism â€Å"preserved individual freedom and the market economy insured that government would provide necessary assistance to workers who had lost their jobs of to the ill or aged, who through no fault of their own, could not provide for themselves. He intended to lead the country â€Å"down the middle of the road between the unfettered power of concentrated wealth†¦ and the unbridled power of statistic or partisan interests.†Ã¢â‚¬ Eisenhower thought that the government should provide the American people with more benefits; he signed legislations that â€Å"expanded Social Security, increased the minimum wage, and created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He also supported government construction of low-income housing but favored more limited spending than had Truman.† Eisenhower made sure he had the approval and support of the congress for some of his most important projects that ameliorated America’s basis. The United States cooperated with Canada to build the St. Lawrence Seaway. Eisenhower established his biggest domestic program in 1956, the Interstate Highway, which is a 41,000-mile long road system. This highway program aroused the economy, and made traveling with a car safer and faster, and as Eisenhower said, this highway included so much concrete that it was enough to build â€Å"six sidewalks to the moon†. Eisenhower made a lot of attempts towards achieving world peace, by using the great military strength of America; he tries to negotiate with other countries to decrease the stress of the Cold War. In 1953, America signed a truce that brought peace between North Korea and South Korea. When both the United States and Russia had successfully invented hydrogen bombs, tension rose again between the two countries. Eisenhower decided to have a meeting with the leaders of France, United Kingdom and Russia at Geneva in July 1955. Eisenhower came up with the suggestion that Russia and the United States trade blueprints of their military bases and allow each other to take photographs from the air of the other country. Even though Russians kept silence against this suggestion, but the Americans and the Russians were so friendly to each other during the meeting that tension relaxed. Eisenhower didn’t only focus on the Cold War threats he met with foreign countries, but also to the threats in America. â€Å"He told his fellow citizens to be wary of the military-industrial complex, which he described as the powerful combination of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry. Defense was a means to an end, and the American people had to be careful that they did not allow special interests to absorb an ever-increasing share of national wealth or to endanger our liberties or democratic processes.† Thus, Dwight D. Eisenhower is a great president; as shown above that his foreign policy, domestic policy and his effort to world peace during his term was very successful. Dwight D. Eisenhower achieved a lot of important successes, he left office as a very popular President, and his reputation continued to grow as time passes, until now he is considered as the 8th best president in America’s history.
